Summary | NATURE AND SCOPE

The Director, Accounting reports to and works closely with the VP, Controller to oversee all aspects of accounting controls, operations and reporting for the organization. This role maintains an effective and efficient control structure over all accounting systems, transactions, and activities to ensure accurate and reliable financial and regulatory reporting. The Director, Accounting is accountable for leading the month-end process to timely completion. This position leads the Financial Analyst and Accounts Payable teams and is responsible for fostering a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities | PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Leads month-end close process ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  2. Reviews and approves monthly journal entries and complex account reconciliations to ensure proper accounting treatment.
  3. Assists the VP, Controller in all aspects of financial statement review, preparation, analysis and quality control.
  4. Assists the VP, Controller in coordination and preparation of the organization’s annual plan and variance analysis.
  5. Prepares ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as required.
  6. Develops, implements, and oversees an effective and efficient control structure over all accounting systems, transactions, and activities to ensure accurate and reliable financial and regulatory reporting.
  7. Documents controls through policies, procedures, workflows and job aids.
  8. Collaborates with Controller on technical and complex accounting issues including identification, research, adoption and implementation of new GAAP pronouncements.
  9. Oversees daily accounts payable activity including proper invoice approval, timely invoice processing, vendor management, reporting and establishing internal control structure.
  10. Manages financial analyst and accounts payable teams by fostering a collaborative team environment.
  11. Collaborates with Controller on all aspects of external audits, annual exam and other engagements.
  12. Assists completing quarterly regulatory reporting including compilation, documentation, quality assurance and submission.
  13. Acts as primary Accounting Department liaison for internal departments and organizational matters.
  14. Assist in process improvement efforts to strengthen department’s operational effectiveness.
  15. Assists VP, Controller in the management of accounting systems and accounting functions within the core data processing system, the mortgage data processing systems and investments system.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications | REQUIREMENTS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting and a minimum of 7 years of relevant accounting experience and a minimum of 3 years of experience managing people.
  2. Public accounting experience and/or accounting experience in a financial institution are strong preferences.
  3. CPA license.
  4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to analyze data in the preparation of month end, quarter end and annual financial reports. Demonstrated ability in preparing ad hoc financial analysis.
  5. Strong working knowledge of GAAP and experience initiating and maintaining financial internal controls.
  6. Strong communication skills and experience engaging with and, providing guidance to accounting staff.
  7. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Power Point, Teams) and have a strong knowledge of Excel and experience working in accounting systems.
  8. Must develop a thorough understanding of company policies and procedures as they relate to this position. Must understand and comply with all job-related State and Federal laws and regulations.
