The payday loan cycle starts slow and spirals quickly. One of our members got behind because of a $200 car repair and took out her first payday loan. She thought she could catch up quickly, but then her daughter ran up her cell phone bill, her electric bill was double what it normally is because of a heatwave, and so on and so forth until one payday loan became several payday loans. We proactively identified her situation and were able to help, but we have also instituted significant changes at Blackhawk to make it easy for all members to come to us for help first versus a payday lender. This includes small dollar loans, an altered underwriting model, judgement-free counseling and resources, and a lowered ATM withdrawal minimum.
