Dont Tax My Credit Union
Recently, reports indicated members of the Ways and Means Committee discussed credit unions’ tax-exempt status while debating tax reform. And, in Activists meetings during America's Credit Unions Gov't Affairs Conference, most lawmakers indicated no efforts to change the tax status, though some mentioned "large credit unions" and "credit unions buying banks" may be targeted by taxes.
Lawmakers questioning credit unions' tax status are a minority, but we cannot let these tired arguments gain traction.

The time for action is now.

This is our time to remind lawmakers that opposing credit unions’ tax-exempt status is controversial and not in the interest of their constituents. The most effective way to do that is to help make sure they hear from voters in their district – you and your credit union members.

It is a vital time for you and all credit union staff to contact your Member of Congress today and remind them that a tax on credit unions is a tax on credit union members:  Send Message NOW>>

Nussle: Shift in Tax Attacks Shows Banks Want to Eliminate Credit Unions as Competitors
America’s Credit Unions is pushing back on banks’ shift this week to urge Congress to tax credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets, trying to divide credit unions by size. President/CEO Jim Nussle pointed out that this pivot shows banker complaints have always been solely about getting rid of credit unions, as credit unions of all sizes have the same not-for-profit, people first structure.

Finance Expert, Bank Customer: Changing Credit Union Tax Status Would Be ‘Expensive Mistake’
As tax reform discussions intensify, bank customers are weighing in with their support of the credit union tax status.  In an op-ed published in Bad Credit, personal finance expert Erica Sandberg writes that everyone should want credit unions to exist. Sandberg—who admits she is not a credit union member—says competition among financial institutions benefits consumers because all institutions should be looking at ways to make themselves more attractive to consumers.
